How Do I Use the Online Catalog?
Search Page
Click the button on the navigation bar which is labeled "Search Online Catalog." You will see a search page that looks like this:
Search Tools
Type your search terms into the search box.

Before pressing the enter key, think about whether your search term fits into one of the following categories. Click the icon for the appropriate type of search.
Title
The name of the work you are looking for (for example: Curious George).
See a sample Title search.
Author
The name of the person who created the work you are looking for
(for example: Rey, H.A.). See hint below about typing in names of persons.
See a sample Author search.
Subject
The topic in which you are interested. The library's subject list may not use the same words you think of, so please ask for help if you don't find your subject listed.
See a sample Subject search.
Keyword
If you type words into the text box and then press the "Enter" key, this is the kind of search that will be done. The catalog will search for your keywords among all of the titles, subjects, author names, series titles or notes listed in the entire library catalog.
See a sample Keyword search.
Series Title
The name of a series of works in which you may be interested (for example: Redwall, or Boxcar Children).
Call Number
These codes are used for shelving materials in the library. Some of them start with Dewey Decimal Classification numbers; others start with one of several three letter prefixes (examples include CAS for audiocassettes, VID for videocassettes and CAK for cake pans). You can use Dewey Decimal call numbers to perform a kind of subject search and call number prefixes for searches based on the formats of items.
Power Search
If you type more than one keyword into the text box and then press the "Enter" key, the library catalog will search for all items that mention all of those keywords. Power search lets you decide where you want the keywords to be found.
Limiters
The choices behind this button allow you to limit your searches to particular years of publication or formats (for example, Books versus [Sound] Recordings versus Videos).
Search Hints
When searching for a person's name, as author or subject, enter the last name first, a comma, then the first name or first initial. Remember to click the icon appropriate to your search. See example below:
